Patients should communicate more with their hospital staffers, especially on whether they are allergic to any form of medication.

Pantai Hospital Penang Chief Executive Officer, Lai Yeu Kong said that communication between hospital staffers and the patients was important and it was one of the six ‘International Patient Safety Goals’ (IPSG), which had been adopted by the hospital since 2008.

“The six goals form the framework of patient safety at the hospital,” he said.

Pantai Quality Assurance Manager, Dr. S Indran said the Pantai Group had adopted the IPSG from the guidelines drawn up by the World Health Organisation back in 2008.

“We have applied those goals even before 2008 but we only highlighted them to the public after we had launced them,” he said after the Patient Safety Week Campaign was launched at the hospital.

The campaign under the slogan ‘Patient Safety, Our Priority’, is aimed at raising awareness among medical personnel, visitors and patients on the various methods, which are used to achieve the IPSG.

The campaign, which started on Monday, will end today.

“All of our hospitals strictly adhere to the IPSG where training is provided to new staffers during their orientation.  We also have monthly training sessions for our current staffers,” Laid said.
