Workshop Educates Junior Club Kids on Saving the Environment

AYER KEROH, 29 March 2012 – Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh (PHAK)’s Junior Club in support of Earth Hour 2012 recently held their first Earth Hour Lantern Workshop in mid-March. Children from the Junior Club came together to hand-make cardboard lanterns and customized them with their own creative concepts.

The workshop was aimed at creating awareness amongst the children to conserve energy to help protect the environment. They were given an introduction to Earth Hour, its significance and how they can show their support for climate change action through the symbolic lantern craftwork. Parents were also on hand to lend assistance and moral support to their children. The hand-made lanterns were displayed for public viewing at the hospital’s new lobby.

On the Junior Club activity, PHAK’s Chief Executive Officer, Gan Kong Hoe commented that, “Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh is proud to exhibit the children’s wonderful works of art, to show the public that even the young can do their part for Earth Hour. This year, we’ve decided to educate our children, helping them understand what is happening to our planet and how we can help make a change to save the environment”.

Gan added, “There is more to Earth Hour than switching off lights for one hour once a year. It’s all about giving people a voice and working together to create a better future for our planet.” By utilizing the Junior Club activity as a platform for the children to take control and help save energy towards creating a more sustainable planet.

The lanterns were displayed at the hospital's Earth Hour exhibition to create public awareness.

Amy Norina, whose daughter Ammie Nur Damia took part in the workshop, was full of praises for the Junior Club team. “Junior Club activities are always interesting, educational and highly interactive. It allows the children to mingle among themselves and work in teams. This lantern workshop is great for the children to explore their creativity in arts and crafts and find out more about Earth Hour”.

The workshop is part of the hospital’s Earth Hour initiative, following up from last year’s movement in which high energy consuming spotlights, signage lights, selected lighting located within the hospital’s interior and exterior compounds were switched off during Earth Hour. This year, PHAK hopes to continue with their commitment by switching off the lights on 31 March 2012 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
