Donation and Health Check for Senior Citizens at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheng

AYER KEROH, 14 May 2012 – Twenty nurses and staff from Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh (PHAK) visited the old folks at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheng as part of the hospital’s International Nurses Day celebration.

According to Nursing Officer Mariah Md Sani, the initiative was the brainchild of Chief Nursing Officer Hiew Kon Thai, who was not present during the visit due to unforeseen circumstances. “All of us felt that it was appropriate for the nurses to give back to the society, to make good use of the skills we have learnt to help the less fortunate. The senior citizens at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheng have received us with so much grace and warmth, and we are greatly touched by their kind gestures of appreciation”, commented Puan Mariah.

Nursing Officer Puan Mariah Md Sani (far left, standing) led the entourage, here alongside the senior citizens from the home and Encik Anuar Bin Hamza, the home’s representative (fifth from right, standing).

Anuar Bin Hamza, the home’s representative expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards the contributions of food and towel supplies given by PHAK and extended a warm welcome to the nurses and staff. During his welcoming address, Anuar gave the visiting party an overview of the home. “We have 197 residents here at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheng and most of them are bed-ridden, with only a handful able with little or no mobility issues. These folks are mostly those with no next of kin, abandoned by their families and some in poor health condition. Therefore, we are grateful that the nurses are able to carry out basic health checks for the residents to continuously access their general health condition,” said Anuar. He added that the home welcomes visitors to spend time with the residents, to make them feel cared for and wanted by society.

The PHAK team went for a tour of the home, visiting the various areas where the residents were staying to chat up with them and to conduct screening on their blood pressure and glucose level. The old folks were in smiles greeting the team and were happy to share their stories with the nurses, warmly extending invitations to the team to make subsequent visits to the home.

Gan Kong Hoe, PHAK Chief Executive Officer expressed his delight over this social responsibility project by the nursing team and gave his full support towards its success. “Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh is proud to have a caring community of nurses who are committed in their profession to deliver quality patient care to those in need. The visit to Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheng, as part of the International Nurses Day celebration this year, is an extension of the altruistic work our nurses have established from the previous year in which proceeds from a food festival the nurses spearheaded were channeled to various charitable organizations”, he added, hoping the residents of the home have benefitted well from the hospital’s contributions and efforts.

Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheng is a government-funded home and is pleased to receive visitors who wish to make contributions or to spend time with the residents there by making prior contact with the home’s administration department. With this recent effort, Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh continues her strive as a socially responsible healthcare provider, giving back and reaching out to the community in Melaka.
