The common cold is caused by a virus. The cold will last about 7-10 days. Treatment for the cold will help the symptoms, not cure the cold.
Common symptoms
Burning, sore throat.
Sneezing.
Mild fever (Oral temperature about 99-100° F) and chills.
Nasal stuffiness and clear watery discharge (runny nose).
Muscle aches.
Tired feeling.
Hints for getting over a cold
Get plenty of rest.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Eat a good diet.
Take aspirin as directed.
Warm salt water gargles may help a sore throat feel better.
Moist air (a steamy shower or a vaporizer) will help.
Antibiotics will not help a simple cold since it is caused by a virus, not bacteria.
Some medicines (Antihistamines and decongestants) help the stuffiness. They also make you sleepy. Care must be taken not to drive a car or operate machinery while taking these medications. If you have high blood pressure, check with your doctor before taking any of these medicines.
Always clear your nose by blowing with your mouth open. Do not pinch the nose closed as this might force infected material into the ears.
Hints for prevention
Wash hands after contact with someone who has a cold.
Cover the nose and mouth when sneezing (colds are spread by sneezing).
Use double layer of facial tissue or handkerchief and throw away in a bag. Wash hands after blowing your nose.
