Nosebleeds can happen at any time and for many different reasons. Most nosebleeds will stop by themselves or can be stopped by simple first aid. If you have frequent or unexplained nosebleeds you should see a doctor.
First-aid for nosebleeds
Sit up with your head forward and slightly downward. Do NOT lie down or you may swallow too much blood and you may vomit.
Hold the soft part of the nose together (the nostrils) with the thumb and index fingers and squeeze firmly for AT LEAST 10 MINUTES without stopping. Breathe through your mouth.
If the bleeding does not stop after 10 minutes of CONTINUOUS squeezing, press the nostrils for another 10 minutes.
Most nosebleeds are stopped this way. If the bleeding does not stop, call your doctor or come to the emergency department.
Common causes of nosebleeds
Dry air in the home.
Too much picking of the nose.
Blowing your nose too hard.
