Back Pain

Lower-back pain may result from poor posture, overuse of muscles, trauma or twisting. Treatment of acute back pain includes:

Bed rest
  • Rest only on a flat, firm mattress (avoid waterbeds). If your mattress is not firm, place a piece of plywood at least 3/4 inch thick under the mattress.
  • Do not sleep on your stomach.
  • When lying on your back, place a pillow under your knees.
  • When lying on your side, pull your knees up toward your chest.
  • If the doctor orders bed rest, stay in bed. Raising the body or twisting and turning can strain the back.
  • When getting out of bed, turn over on your side, draw your knees up then swing your legs over the side of the bed.

Heat applications to the area :

  • Use heat for 30 minutes every few hours. You may use a heating pad or warm moist towels, as these will help the healing process. Do not sleep on an electric heating pad as this could result in a burn.

Medications

  • Take your medicine as ordered for pain or muscle relaxation.

After the back pain goes away

  • Exercise: begin exercises slowly, do not overuse back muscles.
  • Warm up slowly and cool down after each exercise session.
  • Avoid any activity that has caused you back pain in the past.
