Allogeneic Transplant

Allogeneic Transplant

What is Allogeneic Transplant?

“Allo” in allogeneic means “other” which implies that the stem cells come from another person (donor) whose genetic typing matches yours. The donor is usually directly related to you such as your brother or sister. Special blood tests are performed to check for donor/recipient compatibility.

In some cases, if you don’t have a good match in your family, compatible donors may be found through the international bone marrow registries. Also, blood from the umbilical cords of newborns have been used as a source of stem cells and used mainly for treatment of children (as the number of stem cells in this blood is not enough to treat adults).

Why do you need Allogeneic Transplant?

Allogeneic Transplant is a type of stem cell transplant used to treat

  • Leukaemia
  • Other bone marrow disorders.

Advantages

  • The donor stem cells produce his/her own immune cells, which may help destroy the cancer cells that remain after high-dose treatment.
  • The donor can be recalled to donate more stem cells if needed.

Disadvantages

  • The donor cells may be more likely to die or be destroyed by the recipient’s immune system before settling in the bone marrow.
  • The donor cells may create new immune cells that attack the recipient’s body, a condition known as Graft-Versus-Host-Disease (GVHD).
  • A small risk of infections from the donor cells (although donors are tested beforehand to minimise this risk).
