Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography is a procedure where it captures detailed X-Ray images of the bile duct and pancreas. An endoscope, a very long and flexible tube, is inserted through the mouth and carefully pushed into the stomach and into the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum). The opening of the bile duct, called a papilla, is then located. A small plastic tube is then guided into the endoscope through the papilla in order to reach both the bile and pancreatic duct. A small amount of dye will be injected into the ducts for X-Ray imaging.
Endoscopi Retrograde Cholangia-Pancreatography may be used by your doctor to assess and treat your symptoms and conditions such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and upper-abdominal pain. The ERCP is also used to detect any presence of bile duct stones, tumours in the bile duct, liver or pancreas, or if the ducts are blocked. The ERCP is also used before and after gallbladder surgery to improve surgical procedure.
