Hi Dr. Few days ago I slipped and fall on a wooden chair edge. The top of my head and neck hit the chair. But there was no bleeding nor fainting or vomitting. A day after the incident, I had slight pain on the top of my head and neck. Then the pain slow subsided. Today I don’t feel the pain anymore. Do I still need to get MRI scan, Dr?
Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your fall. It's good to know that there was no bleeding, fainting, or vomiting immediately after the incident. However, hitting your head can still be concerning. Here are some general guidelines to follow:1. **Monitor for Symptoms:** Keep an eye out for any unusual symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, memory problems, or changes in vision or speech. If any of these develop, seek medical attention immediately.
2. **Rest:** It's essential to get plenty of rest after a head injury. Avoid strenuous activities and give yourself time to recover.
3. **Ice Pack:** If you are experiencing pain or swelling, you can apply an ice pack to the affected area for 15-20 minutes every few hours. Make sure to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to avoid direct contact with your skin.
4. **Pain Relief:** Over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help with any headaches or discomfort.
5. **Stay Hydrated:** Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as dehydration can exacerbate symptoms.
6. **Avoid Alcohol:** It's best to avoid alcohol consumption for a few days as it can worsen symptoms of a head injury. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms worsen, please consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. It's essential to err on the side of caution when it comes to head injuries. Take care and feel better soon.
Regarding MRI, since the incident happened before the 5th of April, there is no urgency for a MRI brain, however if you show signs of increased brain pressure eg:
1. persistent vomiting
2. fits
3. blurring of vision
4. prolonged inactivity or feeling sleepy excessively
Kindly proceed to the ED for immediate check for a CT or MRI. Thank you
