Hello. I moved to malaysia in August 2024. I had an accident in October where I ruptured ATFL, I went down the non surgical route.. and a ton of physio. I feel like i have good movement, and do all my stretching. But the swelling is still very bad. Is there anything you recommend I do now?
Hi, recovering from an ATFL (anterior talofibular ligament) rupture can be challenging, especially when managing swelling even after significant physiotherapy.
Here are a few things that might help reduce the swelling:
Elevation & Ice: Elevate your foot and apply ice for 15-20 minutes, 2-3 times a day to reduce swelling.
Compression: Use a compression bandage or ankle support to gently reduce fluid buildup.
Strengthening Exercises: Continue your physiotherapy, focusing on strengthening your ankle, calf, and foot muscles.
Manual Therapy: Ask your physiotherapist about massage or manual therapy to help manage tissue restrictions and inflammation.
Hydration & Nutrition: Make sure you're drinking enough water and eating a balanced diet to support healing.
Further Consultation: If the swelling doesn’t improve, we recommend a follow-up consultation. Imaging like an ultrasound or MRI can help assess any underlying issues.
