My 5 years old daughter has allergic rhinitis for about 2 years. Sometimes she will develop urticaria. During this 2 years, she will blink her eye hardly and very frequently and it got more serious (with some head nod movement when blink) lately so I took her to eye specialist and was told that she has eye allergy too. However the symptom persist after all anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine eye drops. A TCM doctor told me that this is a motor tics and nothing can be done. My question is whether is there any correlation between the allergies that causes the tics. If yes, do you suggest for an allergy test? If no, what other measures I can do for the tics?
I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's allergic rhinitis and urticaria. The frequent blinking of her eyes could be related to her allergies as well. Several studies have reported a connection between allergic conditions and tic disorders.
Usually, we started with Allergen identification and avoidance, that may trigger all the mentioned symptoms. For this, Allergy testing can be done for identification of the possible allergens.
Depending on the severity of her symptoms, medications like antihistamines, nasal sprays, or eye drops can be given to alleviate the symptoms.
Finally, if all failed, we can refer to Paediatric Allergist for Immune-modulatory treatment.
Hopefully, after the allergy issue is better managed, the Tics will improve too.
