Ear infection
My 3 year old son had a cold and about 3 or 4 days later he was having a fever. And then the next night he wakes up at night crying constantly and when asked he complained of ear pain. We went to a doctor and the doctor said there is an ear infection and gave a drop and antibiotics. He refuses to take the antibiotics so we couldn't give it. But the drops were used that night only. Later he had a brownish discharge (a little bit). After about a week now, there is no discharge or him complaining of pain. Should we be concerned and see an ent specialist?

Answer:
Based on your description, it appears that your child may have developed acute otitis media (middle ear infection) following a recent cold, which is common in young children. The ear pain, fever, and subsequent brownish discharge may indicate that there was fluid or pus behind the eardrum, and in some cases, a small temporary perforation of the eardrum can occur, allowing the discharge to drain. When this happens, children often experience relief from pain, which may explain why he is now more comfortable.

It is reassuring that:
-He is no longer complaining of ear pain
-There is no ongoing discharge
-He appears otherwise well

However, as the oral antibiotics were not completed, and given the episode of ear discharge, we would recommend a review by an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist. This is to:
-Check whether the ear infection has fully resolved
-Ensure the eardrum has healed properly
-Prevent potential recurrence or complications

In the meantime, please seek medical attention promptly if you notice:
-Recurrence of fever or ear pain
-New or persistent ear discharge
-Reduced hearing, balance issues, or lethargy

You may arrange an ENT consultation at our hospital for further assessment and reassurance.
