MRSA or normal pimple?
Hi doctor, I'm a jiujitsu practitioner and went to the gym earlier today to train. I showered right after the training session before leaving the gym. I remember touching my face a couple of times before showering. When I got home, I noticed (about 6 hours later), that I had a pimple / boil-looking bump on my face, right next to my right nostril. How do I determine if this is a harmless pimple or an MRSA infection? Please help.

Answer:
Based on what you have shared, a small bump near the nostril that appears within several hours after training may have a few possible causes, most commonly a blocked pore, inflamed hair follicle (folliculitis), or an acne-type lesion. These are usually harmless and may resolve on their own over a few days.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) skin infections, while possible in contact sports, typically have certain features that distinguish them from simple pimples. Signs that raise concern for MRSA or another bacterial skin infection include:
Rapid increase in size
Increasing pain, warmth, redness, or swelling
Pus or fluid drainage
A lesion that feels firm or deep under the skin
Fever or feeling generally unwell
Failure to improve or worsening after 2–3 days

Lesions around the nose should be monitored carefully, as this area is more sensitive to infection. We advise not to squeeze, pop, or manipulate the bump, as this can worsen inflammation or spread bacteria. Keep the area clean, avoid touching it unnecessarily, and observe it closely.
If the lesion becomes more painful, enlarges, starts draining pus, or if you develop fever or facial swelling, we strongly recommend that you seek medical attention promptly. A doctor may assess whether treatment such as topical or oral antibiotics is necessary and, if needed, perform a swab test to check for MRSA.
For athletes involved in close-contact sports, maintaining good hygiene, showering promptly after training (as you have done), and regularly cleaning training gear are important preventive measures.
