Hello. I have a large head.May I know how to detect whether if I have hydrocephalus or not? Regardless of the results,is it possible to reshape the skull of the head becoming more smaller?
Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern. We understand that questions about head size and potential medical conditions such as hydrocephalus can be both personal and important, and we appreciate your initiative in seeking clarity.
Hydrocephalus is a condition caused by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain’s ventricles, which may lead to increased pressure within the skull. In adults, this can present with symptoms such as persistent headaches, nausea, blurred or double vision, balance or walking difficulties, urinary incontinence, cognitive issues (such as memory loss or confusion), and, in some cases, an enlarged head—although this last symptom is more typical when hydrocephalus develops earlier in life.
To assess for hydrocephalus, the following steps are typically recommended:
Neurological Evaluation – to check for signs affecting reflexes, coordination, vision, and mental functions.
Brain Imaging – MRI or CT scans are essential to identify any excess fluid or enlarged ventricles.
Additional Testing – in some cases, procedures like lumbar puncture or intracranial pressure monitoring may be necessary.
Please note that if you are not experiencing neurological symptoms, a larger head size alone may not be cause for concern and can often be attributed to normal genetic variation.
Regarding your question about reducing or reshaping the skull, it's important to understand that in adults, the skull bones are fused and cannot naturally decrease in size. While cranial reduction surgery exists, the decision of the surgery depends on the investigation results and the examination of the surgeon.
