Endoscopy Unit

What is endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a vital medical procedure that allows healthcare professionals to examine the interior of the human body using specialized endoscopic instruments. Unlike traditional imaging methods, endoscopy involves the direct insertion of these instruments into the body, making it an essential tool for diagnosis and treatment. It finds application across a range of anatomical areas, including the gastrointestinal tract, rectum, respiratory system, and more.

Why choose Pantai Hospital Ampang?

Our Endoscopy Unit at Pantai Hospital Ampang brings together a team of medical experts, including gastroenterologists, surgeons, respirologists, and specialized endoscopy nurses. We offer a comprehensive range of endoscopic procedures for both diagnostic purposes and preventive healthcare.

Comprehensive Endoscopic Services

Our Endoscopy Unit is well-equipped to diagnose and treat various digestive conditions, including polyps, cancers, ulcers, bile duct and pancreatic stones, and non-cancerous tumours. Furthermore, endoscopy is employed to investigate abnormalities in the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder.

Key Endoscopic Procedures

Gastroscopy (Upper Endoscopy): This procedure allows for the examination of the upper digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, and the initial portion of the small intestine (duodenum). It is commonly used to investigate symptoms like heartburn, abdominal pain, vomiting, or gastrointestinal bleeding.

Colonoscopy: Colonoscopy offers a direct view of the colon (large intestine) and is essential for evaluating changes in bowel habits. It is often recommended for colon cancer screening.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): This procedure is employed to diagnose and treat disorders of the bile and pancreatic ducts, allowing for the removal of stones causing jaundice and pancreas-related issues.

Bronchoscopy: This procedure provides a view of the air passages leading to the lungs and is used to examine symptoms such as coughing up blood, abnormal breathing sounds, and abnormalities detected through chest X-rays.

Cystoscopy: Cystoscopy allows for the inspection of the urinary system, including the bladder and urethra. It is instrumental in exploring a range of urological conditions like prostate gland enlargement and urinary irregularities.

Preparing for Your Procedure

On the day of your scheduled procedure, please arrive at least one hour in advance for registration and preparation. The procedure typically requires a hospital stay of 1-3 hours.

Sedation Preparation: For those opting for sedation during their procedure, ensure that a trusted companion is ready to accompany you home. Failure to do so may result in the procedure being performed without sedation or being rescheduled.

Dietary Restrictions: You are advised not to eat or drink for a minimum of 8 hours before the procedure. In some cases, your physician may recommend a bowel prep, so it's important to confirm this in advance.

Medication Management: Consult your doctor regarding any necessary adjustments to your medication regimen 4-5 days before the procedure. Ensure that you provide a comprehensive list of your current medications and allergies, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter drugs.

Valuables: For your convenience and security, we recommend not bringing valuables with you, as the hospital cannot assume responsibility for lost or stolen personal items.

Post-Procedure Guidelines: After the procedure, please refrain from driving, operating heavy machinery, consuming alcohol, or making significant decisions for the next 24 hours. You may resume your regular activities the following day. For those who opted for sedation, make sure you have arranged safe and suitable transportation for your journey home.

Results and Follow-Up: Wondering when you will receive your results? Depending on the procedure, your doctor may or may not provide immediate results. Follow-up consultations may be necessary, and you might be required to return to the hospital for further discussions.
