SPINE TREATMENT

What is minimally invasive spinal surgery?
Many spinal surgeries often take an open surgery approach. This means that long incisions – about 5 – 6 inches in length are made. This allows doctors a clearer view of what needs to be fixed.

Minimally invasive spinal surgery on the other hand, utilises a small camera that will guide doctors through the entire procedure. This means only small incisions are required – therefore, minimising any damage done to the area and muscles whilst also ensuring a quicker and less painful recovery period.

Pantai Hospital Ampang’s orthopaedic surgeons are experts in minimally invasive surgery and will only recommend it in the event that all other treatments have proven to be ineffective.

What are the advantages of minimally invasive spinal surgery?

  • Faster recovery time
  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Reduced risks of scarring and infection
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Lower chances of complications and nerve damage

SPORTS INJURY CARE

What are the usual treatments for sports injuries?
This depends on the type and severity of the injury. A thorough physical examination is first done and doctors will review the imaging tests before recommending any of the following:

Home care
If it is a minor injury, it should heal on its own if proper care is provided at home. You may be recommended ice or heat therapy or/and compression. In some cases, you may even be required to wear a brace until the injury fully heals.

Splints or casts
In the case of simple, undisplaced fractures, it is highly likely you will need to wear a cast or splint until the bone heals. Splints or casts can be used treatments modality for ligament sprains or tendon strains.

Physical therapy
A physical therapist will help you stretch and strengthen injured muscles and joints. It is important to note that patients should also do the recommended exercises at home to ensure you heal optimally.

Medications
You may be prescribed medications to help ease the pain and reduce inflammation.

Injections
Injections can help with reducing inflammation, easing pain, and increasing your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Orthopaedic surgery
Surgery is often recommended for faster healing and quicker return to normalcy, in certain cases, it would be the best option to fully restore muscle or joint function. After surgery, you will wear either compression bandages or a brace. You will also be required to go for rehabilitation exercises to help you achieve optimal recovery.
