Renal Medicine

Renal medicine is a specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. It also includes the planning and care of patients requiring renal replacement therapy (transplant and dialysis patients). Renal specialists also look after patients with systemic diseases that affect not just the kidney, such as lupus.

They also perform simple procedures such as kidney biopsies, vascular catheterisation for haemodialysis and Tenchkoff catheterisation for peritoneal dialysis.

Renal specialists work closely with transplant and vascular surgeons to provide an optimal outcome for renal replacement therapy.

Conditions we treat include:

  • Acute kidney injury
  • Fluid and electrolyte abnormalities
  • Chronic and end-stage kidney disease
  • Proteinuria
  • Diabetic nephropathy
  • Renal carcinoma
  • Polycystic kidney diseases and other genetic kidney diseases
  • Glomerulonephritis
