Renal medicine is a specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. It also includes the planning and care of patients requiring renal replacement therapy (transplant and dialysis patients). Renal specialists also look after patients with systemic diseases that affect not just the kidney, such as lupus.

They also perform simple procedures such as kidney biopsies, vascular catheterisation for haemodialysis and Tenchkoff catheterisation for peritoneal dialysis.
