Triage & Waiting Time

The triage system is used to sort patients into categories so those with urgent medical needs get help first. The assessment is based on how sick a patient is upon arrival at the emergency.

An overview of three category triage acuity systems.

Red Zone: Emergency

    Emergency

    Within 5 minutes

  • Cardiopulmonary arrest, severe respiratory distress, major burns, tier 1 trauma, massive uncontrolled bleeding, coma, etc.

    Yellow Zone: Urgent

      Urgent

      Under 30 minutes

    • For example, open fractures, diarrhoea, vomiting with dehydration, active chest pains, acute major bleeding, acute abdominal pains, etc.

    Green Zone: Non Urgent

      Class 3 (1) Non-critical but needing multiple resources

      Under 60 minutes

    • For example, any emergency in need of multiple facilities such as blood tests and imaging at the same time.

    • Class 3 (2) Non-critical but needing one resource

      Under 90 minutes

    • For example, in need for blood test only or imaging only

      Class 3 (3) Non-critical without needing any resource

      Under 90 minutes

    • Requires consultation only.
