Therapeutic cardiology procedures aim to restore
the blood flow in the
arteries and to extend heart health.
Medical
An atherectomy is the use of a catheter with a
blade that removes plaque from a blood vessel, usually an artery. It
is performed with local anaesthesia.
A heart stent is inserted into a blocked blood vessel to keep it
open and ensure the continued flow of blood. A heart stent procedure
is usually done with local anaesthesia and sedation and takes around
an hour.
A defibrillator is a device that provides an
electric shock to the heart for patients experiencing cardiac
arrest. It can save a life, and are used by not just medical
specialists but also first responders and trained bystanders. An
automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable type of
defibrillator that can stop arrhythmia and help restore a regular
heartbeat.
Invasive
An angioplasty is the mechanical widening of a
blood vessel. An angioplasty is the insertion of a thin tube with a
balloon through a blood vessel, from another part of your body to
the heart. This balloon is inflated to widen the artery. It is a
minimally invasive procedure. A percutaneous transluminal coronary
angioplasty (PTCA) is a type of angioplasty done in a coronary
artery.
A pacemaker is a small electrical device implanted
under the skin to help regulate heart arrhythmias. It is usually
implanted during pacemaker surgery which is a major surgical
procedure. A pacemaker can monitor your heartbeat, breathing, blood
temperature, and even adjust your heart rate to match your activity
levels.
