How do I know if my newborn is receiving sufficient breast milk?
Published On: 25/02/2022

You can know whether your newborn is receiving sufficient breast milk, such as these signs below:

Immediately after the feeding:
  • Baby unlatches from breast
  • Baby looks content
  • Baby is not fussy
Throughout the day:
  • More than 6 heavy diapers of urine in a day
  • 3 to 5 times of passing motion
Throughout the infancy:
  • Weight gain

On this note, a weight loss of 5 – 7 percent of the initial weight, or the birth weight, can occur and is considered normal. However, the baby should regain his/her birth weight at 10 days old. As a general guide, newborns are expected to gain about 30g per day up to 3 months of age.
