Oncology - Cancer Treatment

Oncology is the study and treatment of cancer, and an oncologist is a doctor who specialises in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is an uncontrolled growth of cells in the body. Under normal circumstances, cells grow and divide into new cells. Old or damaged cells would naturally die and are replaced by these new cells.

However, occasionally, this process fails to work correctly, causing abnormal or damaged cells to grow and multiply at an accelerated rate. This abnormal group of cells are tumours, which are either cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign).

Cancerous tumours can migrate (or metastasise) from one location to other parts of the body to form new tumours.
